HAGGADAH & HISTORY :
A Panorama in Facsimile of Five Centuries of the Printed Haggadah from the Collections of Harvard University and the Jewish Theological Seminary
Josef Hayim Yerushalmi
The complete, unabridged original with a new preface by the author. Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize when it was first published in 1975, the first editions of Haggadah & History sell for more than ten times the original price. Now, JPS presents a special collector's edition, with a new preface by author Yosef Yerushalmi.
In his new preface, Professor Yerushalmi recounts the story of the discovery and fate of the Sarajevo Haggadah, which he says is "arguably the most renowned illuminated Haggadah manuscript from the Middle Ages to have survived." Haggadah & History is the first panoramic view of the evolution of the Passover Haggadah, from the beginnings of Hebrew printing in the fifteenth century to modern times.
The two hundred facsimile plates reproduce representative pages from rare printed Haggadahs in two of the world's outstanding Judaica collections: the libraries of Harvard University and the Jewish Theological Seminary. This visual history is complemented by Professor Yerushalmi's fascinating historical introduction and richly detailed place descriptions. The result is a rare blend of scholarship and art. Haggadah and History, however, is much more than a history of the Passover Haggadah. It is also a mirror of the last five centuries in Jewish history -- as reflected in the Haggadah itself. As Professor Yerushalmi so eloquently demonstrates, to follow the Haggadah through history is to follow the historical course of the Jewish people who are its custodians. The diversity of the Jewish diaspora comes to life in Haggadahs emanating from different communities and translated into a host of languages. The metamorphoses of Haggadah woodcuts and engravings provide keys to Jewish attitudes.

The Psalms have long brought solace and comfort to those who mourn, and helped all of us find the spiritual in everyday life. JPS is pleased to reissue The Book of Psalms, with the new JPS translation, separately from the TANAKH.
This translation of the Book of Psalms first appeared in 1973, and was later incorporated into the present translation of the entire TANAKH (Torah, Prophets, and Writings) which was first published in 1985. Since then, several revisions and corrections ha ve been made to the translation. Following the approach of the original translation committee, the entire gamut of biblical interpretations, ancient and modern, Jewish and non-Jewish, has been consulted, and, whenever possible, the results of modern study of the languages and cultures of the ancient Near East have been brought to bear on the biblical text. In choosing between alternatives, however, just as antiquity was not in itself a disqualification, so modernity was not in itself a recommendation. JPS 's goal was to transmit the directness, the simplicity, and the uniquely Israelite expressions of piety that are so essential to the sublimity of the Hebrew Bible.
