Capella degli Scrovegni - Arena Chapel. Tel. 049 8204550. 9-19 closed Monday. The masterpiece of Giotto (1303). Last Judgement, Annunciation, Life of Mary, Life of Christ, the Lamentation, the Passion, monochrome Virtues and Vices. On the altar is a Madonna and Child by Giovanni Pisano. Musei Civici - next to Arena Chapel. 9-19 closed Mon. Tel. 049 8204550. Ground floor: interesting Archaeological Museum; Roman finds from Padua, sculpture, sarcophagi; prehistoric, Egyptian, Etruscan, early Christian sculpture. First floor: painting gallery, very large and frustrating. In between everything find not particularly major works by Giotto, Bellini, Tintoretto, Titian, Giorgione, Veronese, Tiepolo, Longhi.
Chiesa degli Eremitani - 7.30-13, 15.30-19. Romanesque-Gothic church. South aisle, frescoes by Mantegna, in poor condition, destroyed by bombing in 1944.
Duomo - 9-12:30, 14.30-19. In the Sacristy, Bassano, Schiavone, Tiepolo, Bordone. Baptistry (12C), frescoes by Guisto de'Menabuoi (1378).
Basilica di San Antonio - (Il Santo) open till 7:45 PM. Begun in 1232. Fantastic mingling of Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic, towers, domes. Behind bronze doors of the choir is the High Altar of Donatello (1443). Reliefs of Life of S. Antonio, angels, musicians, Pieta', evangelists. Top, Madonna Enthroned, saints, bronze crucifix. The placement and configuration of the pieces was changed in 1895. North transept, the tomb of Saint Anthony (died 1231). In the piazza, equestrian sculpture of Gattamelata by Donatello (1453), copies of his reliefs on the base. South of the church, Convento with four cloisters; 2nd cloister, Romanesque doorway, Renaissance loggia and well (1492); 4th cloister, steps climb past the original stone reliefs from Gattamelata by Donatello.
Museo Antoniano - Piazza del Santo - 9-13, 14.30-18.30. Tel. 049 8225656. Lunette fresco by Mantegna (1452).
Scuola del Santo - 9-12.30; 14.30-19. Tel. 049 8755235. 3 early paintings by Titian.
Oratorio di S. Giorgio - Early Titian frescoes. €. 3,00
Orto Botanico - from Piazza del Santo, via Orto Botanico. 9-13, 15-18 closed Mon. Tel 049 656614. Oldest in Europe (1545). Includes Goethe's Palm, a tree that gave him an idea of a single primordial plant that he thought might be the origin of all plant life. The sunflower, introduced into Italy in 1568, was first cultivated here. €2.58
Piazza dei Signori - in the facade of Palazzo del Capitanio (1599) is an astronomical clock (1344), the oldest in Italy. Pass through the arch to the Liviano university, frescoes by Massimo Campigli, statue of Livy by Arturo Martini.
San Giustina - Prato della Valle. Altarpiece by Veronese, south aisle, Luca Giordano. Chapel of Santa Maria, 6C tympanum, reliefs. The prato has been used since Roman times, today there is a market on Saturdays.
Santa Sofia - via Altinate. Oldest church in Padua (9C) rebuilt in 11-12C in Romanesque style.
