CE (Continuing Education) is designed for adults with some background in art who want to create more time in their lives to paint and draw, or to pursue their interest to a deeper level. This 3-4 week studio program, modeled after the School, is especially appropriate for people whose involvement with art was interrupted or limited by career or family demands, but who are eager to begin to study and practice again. Also welcome in the program are students who want more intense and professional instruction than is available in their communities.
Students selected for the CE Program will explore and deepen their interest in art, working and living in the heart of Italy, surrounded by a landscape of unparalleled beauty in close proximity to great masterpieces of art and architecture. Like our longer, core program for professional artists, the emphasis is on work in the studio, with daily classes in drawing and painting, and weekly trips to Italy's cities of art. The International School's community of eminent lecturers and visiting artists enhances the studio program with after-dinner talks. Faculty members are invited as guest instructors to offer additional classes or critiques.
The special focus of the CE Program is to help you reconnect with and intensify your interest and skills in painting and drawing. Perhaps career or family demands have limited your time to paint, and you've wondered what you could accomplish given the chance. CE offers space and time to completely devote yourself to your work, under the close guidance of our renowned faculty, in a supportive and intimate environment.

View of Todi
Overlooking the lush Tiber River valley, Montecastello di Vibio is a tiny hill town in the province of Perugia, halfway between Rome and Florence. Preserving over 2000 years of history, the cities and hill towns of Umbria and nearby Tuscany are landmarks of European culture. Many, like Todi, were built over four eras - Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance. The surrounding landscape is patterned with vineyards, olive groves and sunflower fields, etched with rows of cypresses and umbrella pines.
In this environment, you will paint and sculpt under the same light that spawned the Western world's greatest art. Here is the architecture and countryside that inspired Renaissance artists and later masters like Poussin, Ingres and Corot. One can see why the region still attracts artists from all over the world.
CE's home in Monecastello is a newly renovated convento, with stunning views of the Umbrian landscape.
Regular classes in painting are Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m.till noon, with lunch from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Instructors teach three days a week, and the fourth day students continue their classwork on their own. The early evening before our 8:00 dinner is time for independent work, exploring Montecastello, or just spending time privately or with friends. Occasionally a lecture will be scheduled before dinner. Fridays are trip days.
The school building is a newly renovated convento in Montecastello, with stunning views of the Umbrian landscape. Rooms are cleaned daily, with linens changed once a week and towels changed twice a week. CE classrooms and studios are in the school building and in auxiliary buildings nearby. Students will spend much of their painting time out of doors.
The program fee includes three delicious Umbrian meals each day, excluding trip days, in the Crispolti Institute dining room or on the scenic dining terrace. Students, teachers and staff enjoy meals together, enabling students to have close contact with their art mentors. Occasionally, visiting artists or memb - 2006ers the faculty will join the CE community for meals and after-dinner talks.

The ongoing studio work from intense observation and analysis is interspersed with weekly day-trips to study Italy's millennia-old heritage of art, from ancient to contemporary, engaging CE artists in a dialogue with the masterworks of the past and present. We travel by chartered bus to Rome, Florence, Siena, Assisi, Perugia, Bologna, Sansepolcro, and Arezzo.
A faculty member or visiting art historian gives preparatory lectures to enrich and enliven our trips. Students and faculty are then free to go independently or in groups to visit museums and churches, or anything they wish to see. The Student Sourcebook contains a guide for our trips and other travel information. Faculty and students organize informal visits to nearby towns like Gubbio and Spoleto, or return to places the group has visited. Car rental services and public transportation enable people to travel independently.
